Warning about entering abandoned buildings |
||
|
We are warning children and young people to keep away from abandoned buildings following several recent incidents in Welwyn Garden City town centre. The Welwyn Hatfield North Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) have been responding to reports of young people accessing the former Shredded Wheat factory and Lloyd’s bank buildings. Abandoned buildings can present hidden dangers such as: Sergeant Deane Brittain, who leads the Welwyn Hatfield North NPT said: “We know that urban exploring is a popular activity and these abandoned and derelict sites often appear exciting or mysterious. However, these sites are highly unpredictable, with the potential for serious injury in a matter of seconds. “We are urging parents and carers to have open conversations with their children about the dangers and to ensure they understand that entering abandoned buildings is both unsafe and against the law. “Anyone who enters enclosed land or buildings without lawful authority may be committing an offence under the Vagrancy Act. Those who access premises - including abandoned properties - with the intent to cause damage or steal could face more serious charges, including burglary.” Parents and carers are encouraged to: Anyone who witnesses trespassing or unsafe behaviour around an abandoned building is asked to ring 101. If you believe life is in danger, call 999. You can also use Herts Connected to let us know what you think we should be prioritising in your area.
